Everett Lee Halstead died on Friday, September 26, at
home. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Rollie Halstead and Joe Ella
Foor Halstead, and by his sister, Evelyn Ray.
Born August 9, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, Mr. Halstead was raised in
Owensboro, Kentucky. After serving his country as an Army paratrooper with
the 82nd Airborne, he attended University of Kentucky and graduated with a
degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Halstead worked as a procurement
engineer at the Gaseous Diffusion Plant for 43 years, retiring in 1983.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Ann Halstead and children Leah
Bailey (Matt) of Oak Ridge; Elaine Schauman (Bill) of Spring, Texas; Eve
Pearson (Dave) of Marietta, Georgia; and Russell Halstead (Denise) of
Orange, Connecticut as well as five granddaughters: Lauren Bailey Larmon (
Brian) of Columbia, South Carolina; Dana, Kendall and Kristy Pearson of
Marietta, Georgia; and Alexis Halstead of Orange, Connecticut.
Mr. Halstead was active in the National Archery Association and achieved the
ranking of National Coach. He was highly sought out as a judge and worked at
the Olympic Archery Selection Trials in 1996. He also had great success as
an archer in the Senior Olympic Games, winning 8 gold medals. He was honored
for his service to children in 2002 with the Children’s Hero Award for his
work with the JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) Program, which he
founded in Oak Ridge.
Services will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 11:00am at St. Stephen’s
Episcopal Church with interment immediately afterward in the Memorial
Garden. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall following
interment.
