Dr. Helen Landau Hayes passed away in Oak Ridge, TN
Thursday April 9, 2009.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Edson A. Hayes, and
two brothers, Morton and Bernard Landau.
She was born in New York City, the daughter of Tobias and Pauline Landau.
Helen is survived by her brother Lawrence Landau and his wife Barbara and
nieces and nephews and their families. Helen graduated from Hunter College,
New York, and received her masters and phD degrees from George Washington
University of Washington D.C. In her long professional career in Marine
Biology, she worked at Woods Hole in Mass. The Office of Naval Research in
D.C. and Smithsonian Institution in D.C. She traveled extensively in her
career, and after retirement went on many trips with her husband. The Tobias
Landau scholarship fund in honor of her father was established by her to
support researchers working on marine biology projects in the Red Sea at The
Interuniversity Institute for marine Sciences in Eilat. Helen and her
husband retired to Hendersonville, NC where she was and actuive member of
the Agudas Isreal Congregation for more then 20 years. After her husband’s
death Helen moved to Oak Ridge and lived at Greenfield Senior Living
facility.
Graveside services were held Friday April 10, 2009 at the Oak Ridge Jewish
Cemetery with Rabbi Victor Rashkovsky officiating.
