Charles F. Kelley Jr. passed away early Tuesday at
Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge after a yearlong battle with cancer.
He was 93.
Mr. Kelley was the son of Charles and Effie (Goforth) Kelley of Knoxville.
Mr. Kelley worked 30 years for the Atomic Energy Commission, which later
became the Department of Energy. He retired in 1978 as the branch chief of
printing operations of DOE’s Oak Ridge facilities. After retirement, Mr.
Kelley worked for several years as a consultant for DOE and as a volunteer
at Oak Ridge Public Library.
Mr. Kelley was a pitcher on recreation-league softball teams and bowled for
many years on company teams. He also enjoyed baseball, was a follower of the
Atlanta Braves and took several trips to St. Louis to see the Cardinals.
Born in Knoxville, Mr. Kelley was a graduate of Knoxville High School. He
worked for TVA before entering the Army in 1941, six months before the
attack on Pearl Harbor. Mr. Kelley was with the 960th combat engineers and
his unit was charged with making maps for air missions. He served two years
in the Pacific theater and saw combat on several islands. Mr. Kelley was
present at Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, and took part in the celebration
after Japan formally surrendered aboard the USS Missouri.
After the war, Mr. Kelley returned to work at TVA in Chattanooga, and then
moved to Oak Ridge in 1949.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanne Shank Kelley; one daughter,
Martha Kelley of Nashville; two sons, Chuck Kelley of Newnan, GA., and Steve
Kelley, of St. Louis; four grandchildren, Christy Peltier of Tallahassee,
FL, Liz Kelley of Chicago, Jennifer Kelley of St. Louis., Charlie Kelley, of
Newnan, GA; and two great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Matthew Peltier of
Tallahassee, FL.
Graveside services will be Saturday September 27, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Oak
Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 5-7 at the
funeral home.
