Richard “Dick” Lines, age 85 of Knoxville, TN died
Monday March 31, 2008 at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville. He was born in
Boulder, CO on April 22, 1922, the second son of George Emery Lines and Ruth
Geneva Giffin Lines. He was preceded in death by two infant children, his
parents, sisters Betty and Louise and Margaret and brother Bob.
Mr. Lines, educated as a chemist and mechanical engineer, was graduated from
the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO in 1948. He was a supervisor for
over 39 years with Union Carbide Nuclear Company and Martin-Marietta in Oak
Ridge. He received several patents during his career. He retired on February
29, 1988. Mr. Lines’ professional memberships included the American Chemical
Society and the American Nuclear Society. He was an honorably Discharged
veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Force from February 13, 1943
to January 26, 1946 with flight and armament training.
Mr. Lines was a life member of the NRA and was co-sponsor of the Anderson
County Gun Club. While in Oak Ridge her served as a Republican election
officer. He had belonged to the Oak Ridge Country club, the Elks Lodge and
the Danceers Dance club. He loved the outdoors. He enjoyed planting small
gardens, boating and water skiing, golf, bridge and travel. He was a
lifelong Presbyterian serving as ruling elder and deacon in the First
Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge. He was a Sunday School teacher and was a
Cub Scoutmaster. In 1991 when he moved to Knoxville, TN he became a member
of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church and later West hills Presbyterian
Church.
In 1967 he joined Lions Club International and became a Life member. He was
the Tennessee State Chairman for Recording for the Blind for 17 years. He
held all the offices in the Oak Ridge Lions Club and in 1985-86 was elected
and served as District Governor. Lions International honored him with the
Melvin Jones fellowship award. He was president of the East Tennessee Lions
Eye Bank and was a board member for many years. Lionism and service to his
fellowmen became his deep interest until his death.
Mr. Lines, who was married September 7, 1947 in Valentine, NE, is survived
by his wife of 60 years, Delores “Dee” Ann Colburn Lines and a son Steven
Richard Lines and wife Mary of Huntsville, AL; two grandchildren Jennifer
Lines Kemp and husband Gary of Hopkins, MN and Aaron David Lines in Wyoming;
two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Christopher Kemp; two brothers, David
Lines and wife Mavi of Omaha, NE and John (Jack) Lines and wife Jerri of
Salida, CO.
The funeral will be Thursday April3, 2008 at 10:00am at West Hills
Presbyterian Church 7600 Bennington Rd. Knoxville, TN 37909 with Rev. Scott
Horne officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family
will receive friends from 9:30-10:00 at the church Thursday. Member of the
Lions Clubs will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family request that any
memorials be made to the East Tennessee Lions Eye Bank, University of
