Dr. Anthony Peter Malinauskas, Sr. – age 73 - passed from this world on Thursday November 13, 2008. He found his ultimate peace surrounded by family and Covenant Hospice in his own home.
Born the son of a coal miner in Ashley, Pennsylvania, Anthony was the eldest of three children. He completed undergraduate work at King’s College in Pennsylvania; a Master’s of Science in physical chemistry from Boston College; and finally earned a Doctorate in physical chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He married his sweetheart, Barbara Derascavage - also of Ashley, Pennsylvania – in 1957.
He began his professional career on the research staff of the Reactor Chemistry Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in 1962, became the Director of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission programs at ORNL in 1983 – a position he held until his retirement in 1998.
Dr. Malinauskas was known for his work in nuclear power plant safety for which he earned The American Nuclear Society’s Special Award for Advancements in Nuclear Technology in Response to Three Mile Island in 1981. In 1985, the Department of Energy awarded him the prestigious E.O. Lawrence Award for his work in clarifying issues of nuclear reactor safety. He has published numerous articles and two books in his field.
His strong belief in church, and community motivated him to become a Eucharistic Minister in the Catholic Church and community-strengthening organizations like United Way, Rotary, Roane County Ministries, and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA).
Friends and family enjoyed his dry wit, enthusiasm for Notre Dame Football, integrity and humility, love of Polish cuisine and fine beer, and passion for fishing.
He is preceded in death by his parents – Anthony and Stella Malinauskas; and by son Robert.
He is survived by wife Barbara of Kingston; son Anthony Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughter Barbara King of Oak Ridge (and husband Joseph); son Richard of Rockville, Maryland (and wife Mary); daughter Brenda Malinauskas of Greenville, North Carolina; daughter Linda Kidd of Bloomington, Indiana (and husband Mark); grandchildren Aubrey Atkinson, Rachel Malinauskas, Tony Malinauskas, Domenic King, Paul Malinauskas, Magdalene King, Cassie King, and Luke Kidd; brother Mark Malinauskas of Murray, Kentucky (and wife Barbara); sister Mary Butchko of Exeter, Pennsylvania.
The family will be available from 6:00 to 9:00pm on Sunday evening, November 16 at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home – 1017 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
A Catholic Mass followed by burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church – 327 Vermont Avenue in Oak Ridge. Mass begins at 11 a.m. on Monday November 17. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
