OLIVER, JAMES W. (JIM)-age 80 of Oak Ridge, TN,
departed this life on
Monday, August 25th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in
Knoxville, TN on May 31st, 1928 . He was Preceded in death by mother, Madge
Stout and father, Collie Oliver and a sister, June (Budge) Talbott.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1946 to 1954. He served time
in Guam and overseas, serving as an Airman Second Class as well as a
Sergeant as a mechanic and technical support with surveillance equipment.
Upon returning to the states, he worked for AEC Patrol in the “Atomic City”,
then serving as a courier, safety inspector and a security advisor at varied
posts for DOE, where he retired from January 1st, 1993. In his free time; he
enjoyed gardening, spoiling his grandchildren and seeing family and friends.
His accomplishments in his career meant little compared to the friends he
made and the lives he touched. Those knowing him best will memorialize him
at the local Ruby Tuesday’s and talk of his jokes for years to come.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 21 years, Patsy Oliver and surviving
caring family members: a son, Michael Oliver, Marietta, GA. Stepson Billy
(Angela) Hollis, grandchildren: Randy, Billy Jr., and Roberta of
Clarksville, TN. He also leaves a sister, Mary (James) McCarroll and niece
Rhonda Teague. As well as numerous surviving nieces, nephews, “adopted
children” and friends that will miss his wit and smile greatly.
The funeral will be Wednesday the 27th at 8:00pm in the Chapel of Martin Oak
Ridge Funeral Home, with Chaplain Tom Rayford officiating. Interment will be
Thursday, the 28th at 10am in Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will
receive friends from 6:30-8pm at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Billy
Hollis, Aaron Mayfield, Jeremy McCoy, Jerry Harris, Jim Wear, Jim McCarroll,
Randall Mayes, and Lee Forbes.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Mary’s
Hospice of 7447 Andersonville Pike, Knoxville, TN. 37938. Without the love,
consistent care and help of those amazing hospice nurses the Oliver family
would have been lost. Heartfelt gratitude is sent to those angels on earth,
as they made Jim’s departure from this earth bearable.
