 Annie Ruth Reed, 96, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday August 7, at Tranquility in Marietta, Georgia.
She was born in Flat Rock, Alabama and graduated valedictorian from Flat Rock High at age 16. She received the A.B. degree from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Al, with majors in English and Science. Mrs. Reed earned the M.A. degree in curriculum and teaching from George Peabody College in Nashville, TN. Advanced graduate work was done at Peabody, the University of Alabama, U.T. Knoxville, and N.C State but mainly at Teachers College, Columbia University in N.Y.C. Before coming to Oak Ridge in 1945 Mrs. Reed had taught in Alabama and North Carolina. During her thirty two years teaching in Oak Ridge Mrs. Reed taught kindergarten, first, and second grade. She taught for a total of 45 years. In one of her first teaching assignments the total supplies given to her was a large box of chalk and a broom and not one book. Mrs. Reed was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oak Ridge Retired Teachers Association, and life member of NEA, the Elderberries, Children’s Museum, Playhouse and Art Center.
Mrs. Reed loved to travel going to Europe, Israel, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, China, Mexico, the Caribbean, Venezuela, Canada and all of our fifty states.
Mrs. Reed is survived by her twin daughters Betty Levine of Marietta, Georgia and Nancy Bolick of Muscatine, Iowa. Grandchildren are David, Marc and Sarah Levine and Lisa Holland, Julie and Brian Bolick and 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister Sue Norwood of Scottsboro, Alabama and a brother Joe Austin of Flat Rock, Alabama.
The family will receive friends at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home on Monday August 11, 2008, from 6:00 until 8:00. The funeral service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge on Tuesday, August 12, 2008. at 2:00 pm.Online messages to the family may be left at www.martinoakridgefuneralhome.com.
