Marie Heider Samuels, age 90, of Oak Ridge passed away
Saturday May 2, 2009 at her home.
Marie was born December 5, 1918 in Carroll, Iowa to the late Henry J. and
Frances Schlichte Heider. After her graduation from the College of St.
Catherine in St. Paul, MN Marie went to work at the Kansas Refinery, one of
the first women chemists at Phillips Petroleum. She later worked for the
Midwest Research Institute before going on to graduate school at Iowa State
University where she met her husband, Garland Samuels. Marie moved to Oak
Ridge 59 years ago and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She
served on the board of directors of the Emory Valley Center from 1988 to
1994. In 1994 she was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Tennessee
chapter of the Association for Retarded Citizens. She volunteered for many
years as a tutor and coordinator for the Literacy Council. Her grandchildren
have wonderful memories of spending summer vacations at “granny Camp” in Oak
Ridge.
Marie is preceded in death by two brothers; Lester and Paul Heider, and
three sisters; Erma Heider, Florence Vaatveit, and Edna Fitzpatrick. She is
survived by her husband Garland Samuels of Oak Ridge, two sons; David
Samuels of St. Louis, MO, and Bill Samuels and his wife Vickie of Asheville,
NC, four daughters; Ann Samuels Wright and her husband David of Asheville,
NC, Mary Samuels and her husband Joe Catellani of Seattle, WA, Jane Samuels
of Morristown, TN, and Kathy Samuels Crabb and her husband Chuck of
Royersford, PA, one brother John Heider and his wife Mary of Carroll, IA,
and six grandchildren; Matthew and Megan Wright, Zachary and Mary Samuels,
and Emily and Ann Crabb.
Memorial services will be held Thursday May 7, 2009 10:30am in the chapel of
Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family has requested
contributions be made to Ridin’ High P.O. Box 2282, Morristown, TN 37816 or
to the charity of your choice.
