Edythe Gertrude Visser Young passed away on October 8, 2008 At National Health Center of Oak Ridge, TN. The services in Oak Ridge & Albert City, Iowa will be determined. She celebrated her 100th Birthday on July 2, 2008 with family and friends.
She was born July 2, 1908 in Orange City, Iowa, the seventh of twelve children of Douwe and Gertrude Vander Schaaf Visser. The Vissers immigrated to Iowa from Harlingen, Frieslund, the Netherlands in the late 1800’s.

Edythe graduated from high school in Doon, Iowa; 1925, from Central College, 1927 in Pella, Iowa and Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, Iowa, 1972. She taught third and fourth grades in Fonda, Iowa for 15 years. She began her teaching career in a one room school house near Doon, IA for 2 yrs.

On December 27, 1929 she married Sanford Leslie Young at the Little Brown Church
in Nashua, Iowa. Les graduated from Des Moines College of Pharmacy in 1930. After practicing pharmacy in Sioux City and Laurens he opened Young’s Drug Store in Albert City in 1939, which he operated until his death in 1961.

Edythe and Les are the parents of two sons’, Dr. Leslie Young, Jr. DDS of Overland Park, Kansas and Dr. Jerry Joe Young, DDS of Oak Ridge, TN.

Edythe will be remembered as a hard working, devoted wife and mother, church
and community booster. Teaching school and piano was her life’s work. She also played organ and directed the church at the Evangelical Covenant Church for 30 years.
Albert City was her home for 53 years. She was awarded the State of Iowa Governors award in 1988.

She will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends. Daughters-in-law are Susan Summerfield Young and Christina Kloker Young. Grandchildren are Dr. Kathleen Young, MD; Sanford Michael Young, OR; Charles Leslie Young, KS; Cynthia Young Scott, KA; Suzanne Young Cordatos, CT; Sonja Young Anderson, WA; Jacquelyn Young Evan, OH; Jonathan Jerry Young, OH; Dr. Lisa Wolfe, OH; Kathryn Wolfe Zahn, TN.
16-Great-Grandchildren are Sandra Haberny, NY; Elliott Haberny, MD; Melissa Young, MT; Sean Young, OR; Gwenyth Summerfield Young, KS; Erica Cordatos, MD; Jessica Cordatos, MD; Stephanie Anderson, WA; Amanda Anderson, WA; Hannah Evan, OH; Gretchen Evan, OH; Jonah Zahn, TN; Amelia Zahn, TN, Colin Scott, Madeline Scott, MO, Anika Young, OH. There are 2 great-great grandchildren & 2 expected soon.

God has welcomed her into God’s heavenly kingdom where she will praise God forever.

The services will be held in Oak Ridge, TN & Albert City, Iowa at a time
yet to be determined.
