Virginia Nance Barnard, age 81 of Oak Ridge passed away Monday January 7, 2008 at Brakebill Nursing Home in Knoxville, TN. Mrs. Barnard was born September 9, 1926 in Ripley, MS to the late Mack Bolden and Kittie Turner Nance. She accepted Christ as savior as a young girl at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church in Faulkner, MS. She attended Oak Ridge Bible Church Mrs. Barnard was retired from St. Mary’s, Parkwest, and Oak Ridge hospitals as a medical transcriptionist. She attended Delta State Teachers College. Mrs. Barnard worked from 1944-1947 at Y-12 loading uranium into the Electromagnetic Isotope Separation process Calutrons. She also worked at X-10 and TVA in the 1960’s and 70’s as a secretary.
She was a member of the American Association of Medical Transcriptionist, Boy Scouts Den Mother, Girls Scouts Leader, PTA volunteer, and Member of the League of Women Voters Oak Ridge Chapter. She enjoyed quilting, sewing and cooking. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Robert Johnson Barnard, Brothers Darrell Nance, Rucks Nance and one sister Billye Oldham.
Mrs. Barnard is survived by two sons George Barnard and wife Jan of Michigan, Richard Barnard and wife Betty of Clarksville, three daughters, Patricia Young and husband Tom of South Carolina, Susan Turner and husband Wendell of Knoxville, and Roberta (Kathy) Bryant and husband Bringle of Florida, one sister Maxine Powell of Florida and four brothers Ruben Nance of Florida, Adolph, Wiley, and Nick Dan Nance of MS. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; Andrew Young, Brian Turner, Johnny Smith, Richard Bryant, John Bryant, David Bryant, Ruth Young Quincannon, Ginger Young, Susan Young, Rebecca Turner DeVinney, Michelle Smith Akins, Janell Barnard, Sara Barnard Flory and also by seven great-grandchildren; Abby Young, Dylan Young, Brayden Turner, Stephen Smith, Bailey Smith, Garvin Akins, and Meredith Akins.
The funeral will be Saturday January 12, 2008 at 11:00 am at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ruben Nance (brother of Mrs. Barnard) and Rev. Roy Zinn Associate Pastor of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church officiating. Mrs. Barnard and her husband will be interred side by side in the services on Saturday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. George Rymer of Knoxville is an honorary pallbearer. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:30 Friday January 11, 2008 at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.
