John was born on April 21, 1951 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and, with his parents, moved to Oak Ridge when he was two. He spent a happy childhood and young adulthood in the City he always considered his home. He enjoyed the benefits of Oak Ridge’s fine schools and teachers, which prepared him well for his further education at Rhodes College in Memphis and at the University of Tennessee Knoxville where he earned his degree in Business Administration in 1976. He grew up and remained an avid UT Sports follower and Formula One and Indy Car race fan.

Mr. Gibson was a Software Consultant to Gerdau Ameristeel in Tampa, Florida. He had over 30 years experience in information technology as a developer of custom computer applications. For a number of years he was owner and technical manager of Gibson Consulting Incorporated. His career started locally at Union Carbide.

He was preceded in death by his father John Henry (Jack) Gibson, Sr. and by his stepfather Seymour (Sy) Levin.

In addition to his wife, Lil, he is survived by his mother Dorothy (Dot) DeBerry Levin, Oak Ridge; his sisters Jane Gibson, Kingston; Becky Gibson, Cookeville; and Claudia Simpson and husband Lynn and his nephew John (Jack) Simpson, Harriman. Also surviving Mr. Gibson are stepbrothers and stepsisters; Steve Levin and family, Clayton, North Carolina; Natalie Levin and Dennis Coohill, New York City; Charles Levin and wife Annette, Knoxville; and Margaret Levin, Boston. Aunts and an uncle who survive him are Maxine and Bill Vaden, Oak Ridge; Edith Jones, Bloomington Springs, Tennessee; and Nelle Evans, Joelton, Tennessee.
