Kathleen A. Glasstone passed away Monday January 7, 2008 after a lengthy illness.
Born august 23, 1913, Kathleen A. Grant, the daughter of a Methodist minister, she grew up in Michigan. She obtained her B.A. in music from Eastern Michigan College in Ypsilanti and taught third grade and music in the Ypsilanti Public Schools. She then earned a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Michigan.
In 1940 she married Dr. William H. Sullivan, a physical chemist, who later held several responsible positions in connection with the development of the atomic bomb. Kathleen and her family moved to Oak Ridge in 1951. From 1953 to 1963, Kathleen taught piano to many young people in Oak Ridge, and then worked ass a Librarian at Y-12. Her husband was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and after 12 years of being bedfast died in 1968.
In 1969, Kathleen married Dr. Samuel Glasstone, a scientific author of 39 books, dealing with such subjects as Physical Chemistry, Space Sciences and Nuclear Energy. For a short time they lived near Los Alamos, New Mexico, and then moved back to Oak Ridge, TN in 1970. Until Samuel’s death in 1986 Kathleen was a dutiful and loving wife, enabling Samuel to extend his excellent writing career to his last year of life.
Kathleen is survived by two sons, who have both earned doctorates. Son Bill Sullivan is now retired as a professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, having taught at the University of Tennessee, Arizona State University, and Virginia Tech. Son Dwight is a United Methodist pastor in Whittier, CA. Kathleen is also survived by two daughter-in-laws, Janet Sullivan and Valerie Sullivan, and by eight grandchildren; Tracy Turner, Will Sullivan, Sara Sullivan, Lydia Sullivan, Jonathan Sullivan, Daniel Sullivan, Erik Jacobson, and Chris Jacobson. She is also survived by three great grandchildren; Alex, Anna, and Audrey Turner. No services are planned.
