Ida B. Horn of Oak Ridge died Friday March 14, 2008, at
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. She was 85 years old. Ida was an Oak
Ridge resident for over 40 years, having moved here with her family from
Biloxi, MS, in 1964. She was an active member of the Jewish Congregation of
Oak Ridge for the entire 40 plus years, and after her husband Bernard’s
death, she enjoyed her volunteer work at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge.
A native of St. Paul, MN, Ida moved to Montgomery, AL to escape the brutally
cold winters, and there she met her husband of 48 years, Bernard S. Horn.
After WWII, Ida and Bernard married, had two daughters, and Ida settled into
an active life as a mother and homemaker. After living 12 years in
Mississippi, the entire Horn family made the decision to move to Oak Ridge
to be near Bernard’s brother, Harry. Ida and Bernard never regretted the
move, chose to spend the rest of their lives in Oak Ridge, and made many
friends in the community.
Always generous and caring with her friends, Ida became an honorary “member
of the family” for many of them. She considered her friends as family, and
was always there for them as they were for her. She is survived by her
daughters, Jacqueline Horn and Barbara Horn, her grandchildren, Nicole
Cherones, Neil Cherones, Rachel Max, Rae Smith, and her great granddaughter,
Rachel Cherones. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
The funeral and burial were held Sunday, March 16, 2008, at the Beth El
section of Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests that any memorials
be in the form of donations to the Children’s museum of Oak Ridge, 461 West
Outer Drive, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, or to Jewish Charities of America, 1100
Larkspur Landing Circle, Suite 240, Larkspur, CA 94939 (www.jewishcoa.org).
