Mary Saunders Scott, 85 of Oak Ridge passed away on
Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at the Estates of Oak Ridge.
She was born Mary Elizabeth Saunders on March 1, 1923 on a farm near
Reidsville, NC. Her mother however said that the birth certificate was wrong
and that she was actually born on March 2nd so both days are celebrated! Her
parents were the late William Robertson Saunders and Nancy Covington
Saunders. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, William
Lee Scott, Jr.; by her five siblings, Robert Lee Saunders, Edwin Saunders,
William Saunders, Doris Ware and Nancy Norton; and by her nephew Jimmy
Norton.
She graduated from Ruffin High School in 1941 and from Jones Business
College, High Point, NC in 1942 before beginning her secretarial career. In
1946 she married William L. Scott in Reidsville, NC and moved to Oak Ridge
where she worked for Union Carbide and raised her family. In 1961 Carbide
transferred the family to Lawrenceburg, TN where they lived for 7 years,
returning to Oak Ridge in January 1968. In 1983 she retired as Secretary to
the Director of Public Relations in order to provide full-time care for her
husband, a stroke victim, until his death in May 2007. She was admired by
all for her resolute dedication to his health and comfort.
Mary was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a Charter Member of
the Oak Ridge Golf and Country Club. An avid golfer, she won the Lawrence
County Country Club Championship in 1964. In addition to golf, she enjoyed
bridge, pool and dinner parties with her many friends and family.
Her love of cats brought her great joy in life. There were TC, Pud, Momma
Cat and Beethoven. The last two, Pretty Boy and Sugar Bubba, were feral
felines “who” were drawn to that love and adopted her when they showed up on
the kitchen stoop.
Mrs. Scott is survived by two children William L. Scott, III, of Oak Ridge,
and Nancy Elizabeth Scott, of Cedar Creek, Texas who care for her deeply and
will so miss her love and guidance. She is also survived by one sister in
law, Frances Duke Saunders of Henderson, NC, and by three nieces; Sarah Lee
Saunders Stanley and Nancy Saunders Whitt, also of Henderson, and Betty
Norton Grant of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Her children, Nancy and Bill would like to thank the good people of the
Estates of Oak Ridge, who also loved and cared for her during the last two
years of her life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name
to the charity of the donor’s choice.
The family will begin receiving friends at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home on
Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 5:30 pm followed by a service celebrating her
life at 6:30.
In keeping with Mrs. Scott’s wishes, her remains have been cremated and
graveside services at her family’s plot in North Carolina are being planned.
