William Lee “Bill” Scott, Jr., 88 of Oak Ridge passed
away on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
He was born on September 16, 1918 in Boone, NC, the son of the late William
Lee Scott, Sr. and Bertha Stanbury Scott. In addition to his parents, he is
preceded in death by his sister, Alice Scott Armfield and his brother, James
Allen Scott.
He studied Engineering at Brevard College and Duke University and worked
briefly in North Carolina before coming to Oak Ridge to work on the
Manhattan Project in January 1943. After World War II he worked as a
Mechanical Engineer for Union Carbide Corporation until he suffered a stroke
in 1977 and was medically retired in 1978.
Following his stroke he continued to reside in Oak Ridge with his wife,
enjoying entertaining by the pool and taking photographs. In 2000 he moved
to the Briarcliff Healthcare Facility where he remained until his death.
Throughout his long convalescence he taught us to love life; always taking
each setback in stride and greeting visitors with a cheerful “Well, hello”.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Elks and Lions Clubs of
Oak Ridge and was a Charter Member of the Oak Ridge Golf and Country Club.
Mr. Scott is survived by Mary Saunders Scott, his wife of 61 years, and two
children; William L Scott, III, of Oak Ridge, and Nancy Elizabeth Scott, of
Cedar Creek, Texas. He is also survived by three sisters; Mary Clark Seelye
of Berkeley CA, Rachel Jones of Jamestown NC and Nancy Whisnant, also of
Jamestown.
We, his family, would like to thank the good people of Briarcliff who loved
and cared for him during his seven year stay there. Also we wish to thank
the doctors and staff of the Methodist Medical Center, especially those of 4
West, for making his last days so comfortable for him and for us.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name
to the charity of the donor’s choice.
The family will begin receiving friends at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home
1017 Oak Ridge Turnpike on Thursday, May 10th at 6pm followed by a service
celebrating his life at 7.
In keeping with Mr. Scott’s wishes, his remains have been cremated and
graveside services at his family’s plot in North Carolina are being planned.
