Mrs. Dorothy Spellman, age 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away Sunday August 26, 2007, at her home.
She was born March 5, 1921, in Bartlesville, OK, to Thomas Joseph and Susanne McKenna Spellman, both now deceased.
She was also preceded in death by her former husband, Floyd Morris; a daughter, Linda Mae Morris; and a brother-in-law, William Klenk.
She graduated from Manhasset High School in Manhasset, Long Island, NY, in 1940 and graduated from Edgewood Park at Briarcliff Manor in merchandising in 1942. She was employed at Lord and Taylor department store on 5th Avenue in New York.
She was a house wife with three daughters in South Worcester, living on a farm, and was very active with Girl Scouts and 4-H. After this, she relocated back to Long Island, in Port Jefferson, and was employed at Cooper’s (known as Cooper’s Angels).
In 1987, Mrs. Spellman moved to Rochester, NY, after her last grandchild was born. While there she worked for the Greece Historical Society.
She continued to follow grandchildren, moving to Kingsport, TN, in 1989, where she was active in volunteer work at the Netherland Inn. From Kingsport, she moved to Mount Airy, MD, in 1993, where she was active in volunteer work for the senior center and Carroll County History Museum. In 1996, she moved to Oak Ridge, volunteering at the Children’s Museum and the Oak Ridge Public Library.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
She was a caring mother, a wonderful cook and seamstress, and an avid reader. She enjoyed gardening and was a good, loyal friend, corresponding with all friends. She was very community-minded, very sociable and a consistent volunteer wherever she lived.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Morris LaForgia and husband George LaForgia, of Durham, NC, and Eileen Susanne Musgrave and husband Glenn, of Oak Ridge, TN; three grandchildren, Margaret Mae Musgrave, Matthew Martin Musgrave, and Maureen Mary Musgrave; brother, Thomas Joseph Spellman, Jr. and wife Margaret, of St. James, Long Island, NY, nieces and nephews, Tommy and Courtney Spellman, Kevin and Katie Spellman, and Maura and Michael Kieran; and several grand nieces and nephews; sister, Susanne Klenk of Port Jefferson, NY; and nephew Peter and Jody Klenk.
