John (Jack) Thomson, age 93, died suddenly Tuesday, May
22, 2007 in Oak Ridge.
He was born May 8, 1914 in New York the son of John and Ruth Thomson. He was
raised in New York and graduated high school there where he was the
president of his large senior class. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and
was stationed in Oak Ridge at the Clinton Engineering Works. After the war,
he returned to New York where he and his wife lived briefly. In 1946, he and
his wife, Margaret and their daughter Susan returned to Oak Ridge where he
lived the rest of his life. He was an engineer at Union Carbide when he
retired.
Mr. Thomson was a graduate of the University of Tennessee where he obtained
a Bachelors and Master’s Degree. He also attended Pratt University. He and
his wife Margaret (the former Margaret Gill of Albany, NY) were married on
May 22, 1943, at the bride’s house in Albany. At the time of his death they
had been happily married for 64 years.
During his life Jack was an avid golfer bridge player and traveler. He was
for many years a board member of the Oak Ridge Country Club where he played
golf regularly with a foursome of friends. In recent years he had become a
skilled tournament bridge player and frequently gave lessons to others. He
was a former President of the Oak Ridge Bridge Club, and one of the founding
members. He and his wife traveled to Europe, Asia, and Scotland where he
played golf at St. Andrew’s and other famous courses.
He was an avid sports fan and followed the University of Tennessee athletics
with keen interest. He also followed the fortunes of the San Francisco
Giants (formerly of New York) and the Knicks.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Ruth. He is survived
by his wife Margaret (Peg) of Oak Ridge and his daughter Susan Thomson
Seymour and her husband Arthur G. Seymour, Jr. of Knoxville.
A funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church, where he
was a member for many years, on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at 11:30am. The
family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment
will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family request that in lieu of flowers memorial contributes be made to
First United Methodist Church.
