Nell Evelyn Vandiver, age 96, of Oak Ridge passed away
Tuesday April 8, 2008 at the Briarcliff Health Care Center.
Mrs. Vandiver was born February 26, 1912 in St. Paul, Virginia to the late
Carlos and Lillie Snyder Hanks. Nell moved to Oak Ridge in 1943and was of
the Baptist faith. She enjoyed gardening and was known to have a green
thumb, and she loved to play BINGO. Nell worked for Marie Wilde in Jackson
Square and Jake Butcher and his family from 1972 to 1982. She worked as a
cook and was Nanny to their children. She also traveled with the family and
got to meet many of the celebrated visitors who stayed with the Butchers.
The most famous was President Jimmy Carter and was honored to have cooked
him a country breakfast of fried apples, grits, biscuits, ham, gravy, and
eggs. Later in life she enjoyed working at the oak Ridge Senior Center where
she helped prepare meals.
Preceded in death by her husband Jim Vandiver, son Robert Denny, and
daughter Betty Denny she is survived by two sons Arthur Thomas Denny and his
wife Mary of Durham, NC, and Rhea E. Denny also of Durham, NC, one daughter
Ann Towns of Murfreesboro, TN, 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and
3 great great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Thursday April 10, 2008 11:00am at Oak Ridge
Memorial Park.
